Buffalo County Citizen Advocacy

About This Organization

Citizen Advocacy is not a service provider. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit program that works independently, doing active recruitment in our communities to help identify and support vumeralbe people with developmental disabilities, especially those who are most at risk in our community. While Social Service support systems are important, they do not always address each person's needs individually and that is where a citizen advocate can bring strength, support, and a voice to the person who may not understand the rights and choices they have.

A Citizen Advocate is an unpaid volunteer from the community that makes a commitment to speak in the best interest of the person they are matched with. Once matched, this match is independent of our office, but we provide support as needed. We are a very small office that spends time getting to know all the people involved in the relationships that we match. Once we learn about the person with the developmental disability, we then ask who we may know in the community who has the characteristics that match that person. We work one match at a time and do not work off of a referral system. The match is made with the intention and hope that it will be a long-lasting relationship for both people involved, and that is the heart of our program.
