World Theatre

About This Organization

The World Theatre is Kearney's last original movie house.  This downtown landmark has been fully restored to the single-screen grandeur of its original design.  Originally built in 1927, the theatre has been through many transformations since the original vaudeville days. After being "twinned" in the 1980's the theatre was split down the middle to allow for multiple movies to be shown.  Unfortunately, this modification removed much of the original beauty of this historic building. The World Twin shut its doors in 2008 and the World Theatre Foundation was formed by founder Jon Bokenkamp to try and save this important historical landmark. After several years of fundraising and construction, The World Theatre reopened its doors as a non-profit, volunteer-run theatre in June of 2012.  Providing a mix of classic, alternative, family, and current films in a celebration of the motion pictures as art.  The World is also host to live music, events, and rentals. In 2020, a years long project to renovate the balcony, stage floor, and lobby area was finally completed. Come in during any show and check out our new swanky lounge and nostalgic Sweet Shop!
