Acerca de esta organización
Access to high-quality health and dental care is one of the most complex and far-reaching issues that rural communities face. In the Two Rivers Public Health Department service area, which includes Buffalo, Dawson, Franklin, Gosper, Harlan, Kearney, and Phelps Counties, the following statistics highlight the severity of the issue:
- 81% of rural children have dental decay by 3rd grade
- 53% of that decay goes untreated
- 40% have limited access to dental care due to little or no insurance coverage.
The effects of poor dental health are profound. For school-aged children, it can cause difficulty paying attention in school, weaken the immune system, lead to other illnesses, and reduce their overall ability to thrive in a learning environment.
To address this issue, the LifeSmiles Dental Health Program aims to collaborate with community-based groups, healthcare providers, and organizations to provide preventative dental services. The program serves seven counties and over 20 schools, offering services in preschools, Head Starts, and schools within the Two Rivers Public Health service area. The services provided include:
- Preventative dental health screenings by licensed hygienists
- Application of iodine on the teeth to fight germs
- Application of fluoride varnish to strengthen the teeth
- Dental sealants for cavity protection
- Education on dental care and the importance of good dental health
- A free toothbrush and toothpaste for every participating student.
